This unit seeks to place literary works in their historical and cultural context, while exploring their artistic dimension. It will introduce students to the tools, methods and practices of textual analysis.

Lecture course. The lecture course, “Poetry and drama in English” will focus on the historical development of poetry and drama in English-speaking countries, introduce basic concepts for reading poems and plays and provide a brief introduction to some key works and writers.

Seminar/travaux dirigés. Literature seminars/TDs will be devoted to the study of various genres and periods, in order to introduce basic critical vocabulary in English. Coursework will focus on recognizing and analyzing literary meaning and building analysis into coherent arguments. The methods of preparing a literary commentary will also be introduced.
